For more than a year now, schools in Guatemala have been closed or opened only sporadically.

In the Western Highland regions of the country, where the Indigenous Mayan Mam population were already struggling to access school and health care, the pandemic has been devastating.

Working in the area of maternal health, prior to the pandemic, CAUSE Canada saw so many young girls becoming wives and mothers too young. With schools open, at least these 13 and 14 year old girls had some opportunity to go to school but with the schools closed, the likelihood of them ever returning to school continues to wane.

While we want all kids to go to school, some, especially young adolescent girls will never return. We know that the pandemic will have caused many of them to marry and now have children too young. Adolescent mothers are extremely vulnerable to extreme poverty, violence, and malnutrition, among other things.

Race to Todos Santos, the largest community in the municipality of Todos Santos Cuchumatan, is an opportunity for you to help change the trajectory of these young girls lives. Join us as we race to provide these girls with vocational skills and economic empowerment that will help them be able to improve their own lives and the lives of future generations.
