ABOUT THE CAUSE

Location: New Zealand

To inspire men to make positive and rewarding lifestyle choices by providing education programmes, research and information that encourage and promote good health.

The Trust is involved across a range of activities that seeks to improve men’s health.

Awareness Campaigns

We are always looking for opportunities to increase awareness of men’s health and promote an early prevention message to groups, clubs and places of employment.

We run a ‘how are you’ workplace health programme where Dr. Graeme Washer, a respected surgeon and GP and one of our trustees, visits companies to talk to both men and women about the risk factors, the symptoms, and what men can do to take more responsibility for their health.

We also organise events and networking opportunities to encourage dialogue and awareness, including a breakfast for Men’s Health Week in June, black tie evenings and golf tournaments.

Scholarships for Health Services

We have established a Unitec scholarship programme to encourage more men into health services, particularly medical imaging and nursing, with 17 scholarships awarded in the last three years. Check out our students.

Research Funding

We co-funded a three year research programme with Auckland University into optimal radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer as well as funding an Otago University research programme into growth regulator Activin C found in the prostate gland.

We have commenced a new initiative with Otago University in mid-2012 to accumulate up-to date health data on New Zealand men and to develop a network of information sources. This has not been done before in New Zealand and this data will help us to become the best up to date repository of health-related material in New Zealand.

Our Health Programmes

We run a comprehensive ‘how are you’ health programme for the workplace and we are about to take the programme to high schools to reach a younger male audience.
