THE THAMES SOURCE TO SEA COMMUNITY CHALLENGE

ABOUT THE GROUP

Join an amazing community of people to take on one (or more) of our thirty sections that make up the entire length of the famous and scenic Thames Path.

The Thames Path is a 184 mile (approximately) footpath that follows the River Thames from its source in the Cotswolds, UK, all the way to the Thames Barrier in south east London.

In September 2022, several groups of people will take on the challenge of different parts of the path.

The event is the brainchild of Muscular Dystrophy UK (MDUK) supporter Andy Davies, who has limb girdle Muscular Dystrophy.  His original plan was to walk the whole route himself, but as the COVID pandemic and lockdown put a pause on his plans, his condition has deteriorated and he's calling on you to help him bring this community challenge to life.

Andy says  "Having always loved trekking and walking, when I was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy in 2019, I thought what flat trail could I still do, to raise awareness and funds for Muscular Dystrophy UK?  The Thames Path was the obvious answer.

However, along came COVID-19 and muscular deterioration, and I had to think again.  So I thought "How about trying to get fellow people with Muscular Dystrophy, friends, family and others, out on the path?"

The idea was born.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

This is your opportunity to help bring this challenge to life.  By creating this virtual challenge, you can take part in this amazing event raising awareness of Muscular Dystrophy and at the same time, raising funds for the support and research of MDUK.  You can walk, wheel, run, hop, cycle, paddle!  You can complete your challenge along The Thames Path your way and choose your distance.

Andy has split the Thames Path in to 30 sections of between four and ten and a half miles.

For the virtual challenge, we are encouraging people to do a distance they are comfortable with, via any means they are comfortable with too.

So please join us with this virtual challenge.  You are also welcome to join our event on 17th and 18th September.  If you wish to do so, please sign up via the MDUK website.  There will be a finishers party at the Thames Barrier on 18th September (venue TBC) and it would be wonderful to meet people who have been involved in bringing this to life.

For this virtual challenge, the joining fee is GBP17.00.  GBP7 of this pays for the use of the platform, and GBP10 will go straight to MDUK.  If you wish, you can also make a donation to MDUK via the JustGiving Page.  There is no medal available, but participants are taking part in a great fund raising activity, supporting MDUK.  There will also be postcards when you reach each of the 30 stages displaying pictures of the English countryside and views  of some London landmarks.

Thank you from Andy and The Thames Source to Sea Community Challenge Committee.
